SCAN Health Plan, one of the largest not-for-profit Medicare Advantage (MA) plans in the United States, has partnered with Astrana Health to launch SCAN Allied (HMO). This new Medicare Advantage offering is designed specifically to address the unique healthcare needs of older Asian adults. Scheduled for rollout in 2025, SCAN Allied will initially serve members in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Mateo counties.
A Partnership Rooted in Value-Based Care
This initiative builds upon a decade-long collaboration between SCAN and Astrana Health, a technology-driven healthcare organization focused on enabling value-based care. Astrana Health’s provider network includes over 10,000 healthcare professionals with expertise across primary care, cardiology, oncology, psychiatry, and more.
“At SCAN, we are committed to collaborating with provider partners to deliver innovative and culturally tailored care for diverse populations,” said Dr. Sachin Jain, CEO of SCAN Group and SCAN Health Plan. “Astrana’s strengths in delivering quality care through culturally aligned providers make them an ideal partner.”
Astrana Health’s President and CEO, Brandon Sim, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership: “Astrana Health is thrilled to collaborate with forward-thinking payer partners like SCAN, who are dedicated to addressing the needs of the populations they serve. At Astrana, we prioritize understanding local healthcare dynamics and supporting diverse and underserved communities, making this partnership a perfect fit.”
Astrana’s CFO and COO, Chan Basho, highlighted the company’s focus on diverse and underserved populations. “Our care management programs are designed to meet the specific healthcare needs of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, among others, addressing higher rates of conditions such as congestive heart failure and stomach-related cancers in these communities.”
Enhanced Benefits for Members
SCAN Allied (HMO) will offer traditional Medicare benefits alongside a suite of supplemental features tailored to its target population:
• $0 premiums
• Unlimited acupuncture
• Flexible allowances for dental care, groceries, and fitness
• Access to culturally competent providers, specialists, and pharmacies
Expanding Access and Innovating Care
This launch reflects SCAN’s broader commitment to delivering innovative, culturally tailored healthcare solutions. Additional features include special needs plans offering grocery benefits in partnership with Instacart, enhanced over-the-counter allowances, and unlimited virtual health services for urgent and behavioral care needs.
For providers, SCAN Allied offers a unique opportunity to participate in a model of care emphasizing cultural competence and value-based outcomes.
Astrana Continued Growth
Astrana Health, Inc. (NASDAQ: ASTH), along with its subsidiaries and affiliated entities, has also recently announced a definitive agreement to acquire Prospect Health. This acquisition includes assets from Prospect Health System, such as its California-licensed health care service plan (Prospect Health Plan) and medical groups across California.
"This strategic transaction will significantly expand our provider network and enhance our ability to offer increased access, quality, and value for our members. Prospect's established presence in key markets also opens new opportunities for Astrana. We believe this acquisition continues to solidify Astrana as our nation's leading healthcare delivery platform, enabling us to deliver technology-driven, longitudinal, and patient-centered care to an estimated combined 1.7 million members across the country," said Sim.
