CMA President to Keynote Business of Medicine Conference; Additional Speakers Announced

On Saturday, November 2, physicians and residents from Los Angeles and beyond will convene at the Westin Pasadena for the inaugural Business of Medicine Conference & Career Fair, hosted by the Los Angeles County Medical Association (LACMA).


Free for LACMA Members, the event will feature Tanya W. Spirtos, M.D., president of the California Medical Association, as the morning keynote speaker. Dr. Spirtos, a gynecologist at Stanford Health Care, became CMA president in October 2023. Her advocacy focuses on reproductive rights, maternal mortality, AI in healthcare, and improving access to care, particularly for Medi-Cal and Medicare patients.


Breakout speakers for the event include:


  • Daniel Cavanaugh, VP of Membership & Development for Cooperative of American Physicians, Inc. (CAP) will share essential insights into navigating malpractice coverage.

  • Vice President for Astrana Health Sheryn Honest, MBA, MLS, CHCO, CHA, CPC, and Ambika Kanta, Sr. Director of Quality at Astrana Health will be sharing their deep knowledge of credentialing, contracting, prior Authorizations and compliance guidance in the Mastering Payor Contracts and Navigating Healthcare Regulations breakout.

  • Jeff Nguyen, MHA, Sr. Director, Physician Services for the California Medical Association will lead the breakout session, Understanding Value-Based Care. Jeff has over 19 years of experience supporting healthcare organizations to achieve the Quadruple Aim. Jeff has experience building cross-functional coalitions to strategize, plan, and implement value-driving capabilities, programs, and process improvements. He offers attendees a deep knowledge of managed care and understands the challenges of medical practices and community clinics' transition to volume + value-based care.

  • Representatives from Long Health and IT company JNT Tek sharing their expertise into Modernizing Your Practice and Embracing Technology for a Future-Ready Practice.

  • Cristian Rico, MD of AltaMed, Stacey Ludwig, MD of Kaiser Permanente, and Karen A. Miotto, MD from UCLA and private practice physicians will Explore Modes of Practice in a compelling panel discussion for early-career physicians and those exploring alternative pathways.



Rounding out the day will be a unique lunchtime panel discussion, offering physicians the chance to engage directly with health plan leaders, including Sameer Amin, MD of L.A. Care Health Plan, and Erika Sockaci, VP, Physician Engagement for Health Net.


Created in response to member feedback, the 2024 Business of Medicine Conference offers practical tools for medical practices and careers with attendees gaining real-world insights to reduce costs, improve efficiencies, and elevate patient care. Solution providers will also be available to engage with physicians seeking specific resources.


This impactful event offers physicians and residents an invaluable opportunity to deepen their understanding of the business side of medicine. With a focus on practical tools for managing practices, optimizing care delivery, and staying competitive, the conference aims to equip attendees to navigate today’s evolving healthcare landscape.
