Thanks to the tireless efforts of LACMA member Dr. Mario Molina, the Southern California Society for the History of Medicine, and the generous donations from our members, we successfully raised the necessary funds to purchase the 1543 Fabrica from a broker and return it to the treasured LACMA Collection at the Huntington Library.
The Fabrica, published in 1543 by Andreas Vesalius, was the pinnacle of the LACMA Collection at the Huntington Library from 1937 until 1992. This 1543 Fabrica is considered the most important and beautiful book in the history of anatomy. It was the first rare book that LACMA ever purchased, funded by the Los Angeles Lions' Club.
When the collection moved to The Huntington in 1992, the significance of the Fabrica was unfortunately overlooked. The Huntington had another copy, and the LACMA Fabrica was sold at auction for a few thousand dollars. While it was common to sell duplicates at the time, the sale of Vesalius's work, a cornerstone of the LACMA collection, was a significant loss. One that has now been remedied!
We are excited to be celebrating this momentous occasion with you!
