FEB. 25 | Second Injury and Its Impact on Physicians and First Responders

The Healthcare Burnout Symposium, in conjunction with the Cooperative of American Physicians, Inc. (CAP), has announced “Second Injury and Its Impact on Physicians and First Responders,” a groundbreaking session on the impact of gun violence on the healthcare community.

Taking place on the second day of the Symposium, the session will feature a panel of national experts on gun violence and mass shootings and their respective impacts on physicians and first responders. Moderated by L.A. Times public health reporter Emily Alpert Reyes, the discussion will explore what clinicians experience because of daily violence involving guns and will delve into “second injury,” such as PTSD associated with treating these types of cases.

Panelists include Dr. Joe Sakran, Vice Chair, Clinical Operations at Johns Hopkins Medical Center and a victim of a shooting as a young adult; Dr. Babak Sarani, Chief of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery, George Washington University School of Medicine; and Dr. Walid Arnaout, a Los Robles Medical Center trauma surgeon. Dr. Arnaout was the attending trauma surgeon during the Borderline Nightclub mass shooting in Thousand Oaks, California, in 2018.

“CAP is honored to sponsor the Healthcare Burnout Symposium’s session to address the ramifications of gun violence on the healthcare community,” said CAP CEO Sarah E. Scher. “It’s imperative to discuss these effects in depth to better support the well-being of physicians and healthcare professionals on the frontlines of this public health crisis.”

“Burnout affects not only clinicians but also the patients they serve,” Gustavo Friederichsen, Chief Executive Officer Los Angeles County Medical Association told Physicians News Network. ”We are proud to be Presenting Sponsor for The Healthcare Burnout Symposium, gathering thought leaders and stakeholders to address the multiple facets of burnout, such as time constraints, technology, gun violence, and policies, and will gain actionable solutions to implement within your health system.”

FEB. 24 | Veteran Champion Surfer to Make Waves at Healthcare Burnout Symposium

Veteran world surfing champion Shaun Tomson will address the annual Healthcare Burnout Symposium on keeping a positive mindset on Friday, February 24.

At 10:40 am, Tomson will introduce The Code for the Next Wave - An Intervention to change mindset, based on his recent #1 Amazon Best-seller, The Surfer and the Sage: A Guide to Survive and Ride Life’s Waves (Familius Publishing), co-written with Poet-Philosopher Noah benShea. Tomson employs surfing as a metaphor to analyze 18 “breaking waves” of life, including loss, depression, aging, and relationship changes.

According to Tomson, a native South African who has won surfing championships around the world, the Code is based on using the power of one’s own will to defend against the rigors of life and calls for individuals to devise 12 life-affirming commitments for themselves to follow for a successful life path.

Tomson put the Code Method to the test when he lost his son years ago to an unfortunate, dangerous school game. He has learned to “ride the waves” of daily existence and is eager to share the inspiring power he has gained on his personal path with others looking for ways to live better and get more out of life.

Tomson, who has a Master of Science in Leadership from Northeastern University and who created two popular apparel brands, Instinct and Solitude (co-founded with his wife Carla), has also worked with some of the world’s best-known organizations - Google, GM, Cisco, PWC, Disney, and Gap- to activate purpose and re-energize their teams.

In addition to these highlighted sessions, leading researchers on burnout and well-being will present at the Healthcare Burnout Symposium, internationally known experts Christina Maslach, Christine Sinsky, Paul Dechant, and Steve Swensen, among many other physicians, nurse leaders, and wellness officers. The conference agenda will also include healthcare professionals who have personally experienced burnout in their workplace. Special keynote addresses will be made by Xavier Becerra, HHS Secretary, and Dr. Diana Ramos, California’s Surgeon General.

The Healthcare Burnout Symposium will convene live at the UCLA Luskin Conference Center, Los Angeles, February 23-25, 2023, to address clinician burnout as a public health emergency that requires immediate action. This mental health crisis has been fueled by the pandemic and has resulted in elevated anxiety, depression, isolation, PTSD, and burnout for physicians, nurses, and many healthcare workers. It goes without saying that the patient is also affected, given the quality of care implications. For this reason, healthcare leaders from across the nation will gather at this symposium at UCLA to inspire a shift in focus from advocating for change within healthcare systems to driving specific actions, innovations, and strategies to end clinician burnout.
